Editor, The Independent:

A group of non-partisan citizens has recently begun the arduous task of collecting over 300,000 signatures to place the citizens generated initiative process petition drive to Ban Fracking in Michigan, on the ballot. (

Fracking is the dangerous process of extorting oil and natural gas from caches located far beneath the Earth’s surface by forcing millions of gallons of water mixed with dangerous, toxic chemicals to set off huge explosion to free these gas and oil deposits.

Fracking needs millions of gallons of water and chemicals to work which in turn releases these dangerous chemicals into the surrounding groundwater and the potential for Earth tremors, as well as infrastructure degradation and air pollution impact.

Earthquakes have increased over 300 percent in Oklahoma and Texas since the advent of fracking in these states. And millions of gallons of groundwater have been polluted with many millions to come.

Because the Let’s Ban Fracking initiative is a non-partisan endeavor and because on the Shiawassee County Republican website it states Republicans, “Have a long history with basic principles: Individuals, not government, can make the best decisions (the Initiative process). It states, We BELIEVE the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored. Shiawassee County Republicans Believe the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people.” The Initiative process is as close as you can get. I thought it would be a no brainer.

With that in mind and thinking it would be a done deal, I asked the Shiawassee County Republican Party to officially endorse the people’s Let’s Ban Fracking Initiative. The power of the Initiative Process is one that resides solely with the people. People start the initiative process. The People go door-to-door and face-to-face to gather the required valid registered voter signatures and place it on the ballot for the people to decide. When this Initiative is placed on the ballot it will circumvent all the money, power and influence the pro-fracking industry can generate in trying to get the Legislature to bend to their will.

But, much to my surprise, I received a quick, terse declination from the County Chair, Theresa Grace. “Mr. Ford, We are supporters of fracking.” I was truly saddened and flabbergasted! The only way to stop this dangerous process is through the citizen generated Let’s Ban Fracking Initiative. Please seek out and sign our petition.
