Sylvia Avsharian, 2nd District, Owosso

Independent Editor,

The fix was in! During a special meeting of the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners on Thursday, April 4, Republican Daniel McMaster was installed as Commissioner for the 2nd District. In November 2018, John Horvath was elected to hold the seat for a two year term.

Tragically, John passed away after being in office for just a short three months. In less than one week from his passing, this special meeting was called to fill his seat with someone pre-selected in a backroom deal. There was no reason given for the rush to appoint someone to take his seat. In doing so, the board gave little concern to the constituents of the 2nd District. This decision was made without allowing time for family and friends to grieve his loss; without time for public response.

Due to the board’s haste, the citizens of Shiawassee County’s 2nd District were not given an opportunity for fair representation. The room was packed with people who wanted to understand why there was such a rush to make a permanent appointment.

There was no reason given. The chairperson, Jeremy Root, did not offer any answers. They were not going to consider Commissioner Webster’s proposal to appoint a temporary commissioner until there could be a special election to give the voters of the 2nd District a chance to choose their own representation.

Instead, the 2nd District has been disenfranchised. Decorum was thrown out the window, along with compassion and fairness. I’ve never seen such a disrespectful power grab!
