Independent Editor,
The Michigan Board of Education has issued a draft statement and guidance for LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Questioning) students for public comment. These are proposed guidelines for all Michigan public schools. The public has until the middle of May to respond.
There are several ways in which to respond. You can go to the Michigan Department of Education website at www.michigan.gov/mde. At the top of the page, on the right hand side, click on the icon entitled “Requests for Public Comment.” On the page that opens, click on the first item with a lengthy title that includes public comment on the draft statement and guidance for LGBTQ Students.
On this last page you will find two links. The first link is to the actual State Board of Education guidelines titled “Statement and Guidance for LGBTQ Students.” The second link is to the public comment page entitled, everyvoicecountsmi.org. Click on that link to make your comments.
You may also respond by sending a FAX to (517) 373-1233, or by surface mail by the closing date to:

Kim Kovalchick, Supervisor
Michigan Department of Education
Coordinated School Health and
Safety Programs unit
P.O. Box 30008
Lansing, MI 48909

The State Board of Education will vote on these proposed guidelines at their June meeting. The public can make their views known until the middle of May.
