Independent Editor,
Due to the selfless efforts of many throughout our community, the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive held Saturday, May 14, was a great success. We are extremely thankful for the generosity of our community members who collectively donated 13,867 pounds of food and personal care items for their neighbors in need in Shiawassee County. Special thanks go to both the rural and city letter carriers of Owosso and Corunna. Their extra efforts were greatly appreciated as they went above and beyond the call of duty. A big thank you is also extended to Lisa Czarnopys, Matt Tanner, and Jacquelyn Vican for their vision and leadership and a special thank you to the Shiawassee United Way Board Members and Hunger Network volunteers for their hard work for this event.
Thank you to the numerous volunteers who assisted their local Shiawassee United Way with the tasks of unloading mail vehicles, weighing food and loading pantry volunteer vehicles on the day of the event. It was hard, physical labor. Your efforts for our Shiawassee County families in need are commendable. Thank you to our local Meijer, Kroger, and VG’s stores for donating food and water to feed the letter carriers and volunteers on the day of the drive. We truly appreciate all of you.
The necessity for food assistance in Shiawassee County continues despite encouraging reductions in unemployment numbers. For example, a family of four needs to earn $11.65 per hour or $24,250 per year to even be at the poverty level. In order to afford minimum basic needs, in Shiawassee County, this family of four must earn $50,007 per year.
Donations to the Shiawassee Hunger Network and the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive stay in Shiawassee County to serve our neighbors in need. All donors as well as volunteers can certainly feel proud as they have helped address a root cause of poverty in our
local communities.
