Independent Editor,

Thanks to nearly 250 donors, nine local nonprofit organizations joined the #GivingTuesday global movement this year, and together, raised nearly $19,000. We’ve all heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The #GivingTuesday campaign followed directly afterward to help kick off the holiday season. Instead of encouraging people to shop for themselves, the idea was to start the holiday season with an online gift to benefit others. The emphasis with this campaign was to make online donations specifically on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – with Mayor Chris Eveleth making a formal proclamation that Tuesday, Nov. 28 was #GivingTuesday in the city of Owosso.

The local nonprofits participating in this year’s event included the Downtown Owosso Farmers Market, Friends of the Shiawassee River, Owosso Community Players, Respite Volunteers of Shiawassee, SafeCenter, Shiawassee Arts Center, Shiawassee Community Foundation, Shiawassee Council on Aging, and Shiawassee Hope. Donors were urged to visit these organizations’ websites, learn more about each and support them with whatever gift they could.

In addition, The Cook Family Foundation matched each online gift of $50 or less through their Nonprofit Capacity Building Program – encouraging nonprofits to work together for greater community impact. A few of the participating organizations also found other matching donors to make each contribution worth two, three, or even four times the original amount, making a $5 gift worth up to $20.

Over $270 million dollars was raised online through the #GivingTuesday global effort, benefiting a tremendously broad range of organizations. Much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness. 2017 is the first year the Owosso area nonprofits have participated in the event as a group.

This #GivingTuesday effort demonstrates how every act of generosity counts, and that they mean even more when we give together. Please know how much your donations mean to area nonprofits at any time of the year. They could not do the good work that they do without your gifts of time, talent and treasure.
