I would like to thank Representative Ben Frederick for recently co-sponsoring a bill to make receiving cancer treatment a little bit easier. This bill would be a step toward helping control the out-of-pocket costs that cancer patients and their families face. When doctors prescribe patients oral chemotherapy instead of intravenous chemo, these pills often have higher out-of-pocket costs. That can force patients to make decisions based on money, instead of what their doctors recommend.
Oral chemotherapy is usually more effective than the alternative – or it might be the only treatment for that type of cancer. And when a person’s life depends on receiving appropriate, timely treatment, we cannot allow any barriers to care.
Most other states have passed laws to guarantee fairness in cancer treatment costs. It is time for Michigan to join them. Thank you, Representative Frederick, for helping push us in that direction.
