Independent Editor,
Veterans in Shiawassee County now have a good way to find out what help they can get from the government as well as a listing of all the veterans’ clubs in and near Shiawassee County. What we have now is a monthly newsletter on veterans’ issues and anything that might be of interest to them and their families. Some subjects are where to get free tax preparations and the Walk of Warmth rotating homeless shelter in Owosso. This first newsletter comes from our Shiawassee County Office of Veterans Affairs and Services. It was put together by Director Jerilyn Strein and Administrating Assistant Casey Welder. It is posted on the V.A. offices website,
www.shiawassee.net/departments/veteran affairs.
For those of us that don’t use a computer, you can pick one up at their office. Any local veterans organizations that want their club events advertised for free will be considered by the V.A.office. Email them at vetaffairs@shiawassee.net. Also of interest to veterans is the Shiawassee Regions Veterans Council. It consists so far of a group of 14 local veterans’ clubs that meet every two months if needed. There are still a few more veteran organizations that have still not joined up yet and they sure better, in my words. I went to my first meeting as a guest and loved it and learned some things too. The V.A. office gave a slide presentation.
Representatives from each veteran club got to tell of whatever problems that they might be having and get a feed back by others on what they could try out and keep their club out of the red. All veteran organizations must join now to help keep their club from going under. We veterans need all the veteran clubs to be successful to help us out. We all should support and when possible volunteer to help them out. I wish that the Shiawassee Regional Veteran Council would be held two times a month, not just every two months. It was that good of a meeting. It was a real learning experience and a friendly place to be. I thank you for having it. Now I thank Jerilyn and Casey for the newsletter. Good work from you all.
