Connie Lake, Past President of Corunna Auxiliary to VFW Post 4005

Independent Editor,

Around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening at the Shiawassee County Fair, the downpour caused the bingo pavilion to flood once again. When the cement walkway outside the pavilion was put in, it was slanted so the rain goes into the bingo pavilion. The approximately 200 people who were there could verify the flooding. The Corunna VFW roofed, cemented the floor, put in the electrical and paid for it all. They still pay a yearly rent fee to the Fair Board that is around $600, yet the Fair Board collects money all year long by charging people for the rental use of the pavilion for storage and reunions.

The money made at the Fair bingo is used to support local and military needs like SafeCenter in Owosso, the Corunna Public Schools backpack program and bands, sending boxes to the troops overseas, the VFW National Home for Children located in Eaton Rapids, just to name a few. Most of the workers are senior citizens who are concerned about water and electricity, which was being disconnected as soon as possible when the rainwater came flooding into the pavilion.

I just read an article in last week’s local newspapers about all the good work Ric Crawford has done as Fair Manager, yet when the Corunna VFW has asked about the flooding problem in the past it has been ignored. This continues to be an ongoing problem every time it rains. Ric is now running for road commissioner against Jeff Apsey. As of now, my vote will be for Jeff. Actions speak louder than words. I am an independent voter and have always voted for the person whom I believe will do the best job, not a straight party ticket.
