Editor, The Independent:
I have contacted the members of the Owosso Board of Education, the Superintendent and Athletic Director, to urge that immediate consideration be given to naming the Willman Field Press Box in honor of longtime announcer Robert “Pudge” Hahn. Pudge passed away earlier this year. He was, for many of us over the past 40 years, the voice of Owosso Sports. Former Athletic Director John Miller asked Pudge to consider taking on the football announcing duties, adding those responsibilities to his existing announcing of wrestling and basketball, and he served with great dedication in that role over four decades before “retiring” a few years ago. I feel that this honor is most fitting and appropriate. Friday night football games, for many of us, were made more enjoyable by Pudge’s announcing and, to this day, when I think of fall football, in my mind I hear his voice echoing across Willman Field.
Pudge Hahn was not only Owosso’s Number One sports fan and ambassador, but he and his family have been responsible for significant fundraising for Owosso athletics and music and played a large role in raising funds to renovate the press box.
I think it is unfortunate that this honor wasn’t bestowed on Pudge while he was still living but it is still appropriate to honor his memory in this way. I have asked school officials to give immediate consideration to this request. I think it would be wonderful to recognize Pudge in this way yet this fall during football season.
