THE PROCEEDS from the July 22 Durand Area Chicken Barbecue were presented to this year’s recipients, Durand Union Station, Inc. (DUSI), and the Durand Patriots, at the Durand Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3851 on Sunday, July 30. Representatives from the five charitable service organizations that held the fundraiser – the Durand VFW, AmVets, Rotary, Lions, and Eagles – presented the Durand Patriots with a check for $1,000 and DUSI with a check for $4,000.
The fundraiser, which was held for the 16th time this year, was initially organized to benefit the Durand Patriots, who collect and send supplies to deployed military members. As such, the first $1,000 of proceeds goes to the Durand Patriots every year.
Additional recipients are then chosen, with a different service organization making the selection every year. This year, the Durand Lions chose to donate the remaining proceeds to DUSI, which is in the process of painting and re-roofing the 112-year-old Depot.
Shown during the check presentation are (seated, from left) Mary Warner-Stone (DUSI), Dennis Martin (VFW), Liz Downer (Patriots), and Jeanette Gomos (Rotary). Standing (from left) is Tim Colton (DUSI), Russ Amidon (AmVets), Jack Lovin (Eagles), Ernie Johnson (AmVets), Tom Gomos (AmVets), and Kent Edwards (Lions).
Additionally, the group donated $300 to Boy Scout Troop #84.
