DUANE AMOS watched as his wife, Jan, spoke Wednesday afternoon when Jamie Bushard of Doggie Diggers presented the couple with a plaque dedicating the new dog barn at the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds in his honor.

Amos is responsible for starting the Shiawassee County 4-H dog program in 1969 when it was held in a tent at McCurdy Park, Corunna. He and his wife, who live just east of Corunna, still attend many of the 4-H practices at the current Fairgrounds.

The 4-H dog program is now under Cheryl Barton’s supervision and includes Doggie Diggers, Hush Puppies and Clever Dogs. It is by far the largest youth dog program in Michigan. (Independent Photo/KAREN MEAD-ELFORD)
