The Curwood Festival is a nonprofit organization run by unpaid volunteers and one paid staff member. The previously mentioned board spends 11 months planning the annual four-day festival, which just celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this year. The Curwood Festival is a substantial fundraiser for the greater Owosso community. Some of the more recent Curwood Festival contributions of note include a donation of $25,000 to build the Heritage Footbridge, the purchase of 30 picnic tables for area parks, the pledging of $1,000 annually to the maintenance of Curwood Castle, the donation of $3,500 to assist with the construction of a playscape in Bentley Park, and the donation of $1,000 to the fundraising efforts of a group that crafted the bronze statue of James Oliver Curwood that is placed in Curwood Castle Park. In 2017, 39 area nonprofits, service clubs, schools, and churches raised a total of $65,000 via the fundraising opportunities available through the festival.
