OPERATION FREEDOM Committee members presented a check for $4,100 to the Durand VFW on Sunday, Jan. 21. The funds were raised during the 2nd annual Operation Freedom game at Durand High School on Sept. 8, 2017. The event was initially organized in 2016 to pay respect to the men and women who have served our country, and to help raise funds for the Durand Area Veteran’s Relief Fund. The fund provides financial assistance to veterans and their immediate family members in Shiawassee County and the surrounding area, in cases of financial crisis. A veteran or their family members may apply for financial assistance by visiting the Durand VFW and filling out an application.

Shown gathered for the check presentation on Jan. 21 are (from left) VFW Senior Vice Commander Joe Cooney and Commander Dennis Martin; committee members Brian Johnson and Julie Alward; VFW Quartermaster Mike Shepard and Auxiliary President Barb Dingman; and committee members Blair Pancheck and Derrick Alward. Not shown are committee members Terry and Alisha Lockhart, and Holly Johnson. The committee is currently in the process of planning the 2018 Operation Freedom game, so stay tuned for more details.
