THE CHAIRMAN’S AWARD is one of several awards given by the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce. The Chairman’s Award is presented to an individual, business or organization that demonstrates a longstanding commitment to the mission of the chamber. The Chairman’s Award is selected at the discretion of the chairman of the board. This year, board chair Jay Slingerland has chosen DayStarr Communications in downtown Owosso as the Chairman’s Award recipient. The DayStarr management team includes President Collin Rose, Director of Network Operations Steve Starr and Sales Director Mark Hudson.

Chamber Board of Directors Chairman Slingerland stated, “Currently employing 14, DayStarr serves more than 1,000 customers and sees annual revenues in excess of $2 million with a network that passes thousands of homes and businesses. It will continue to build out its fiber network in Owosso and other select areas of Shiawassee County over the next two to three years. Typically, this type of connectivity is built by a municipality alone, or in conjunction with a larger private company. DayStarr broke these rules, and has brought a level of tech infrastructure to the area that contributes to the quality of life for its residents and its schools, as well as economic development efforts. Although the company works closely with the municipalities in which it provides services, it is standing out as a small business bringing fiber technology to a small town with its own local people and its own dollars. In fact, the availability of 1G or faster fiber means Owosso is now a “gig city,” on par with much larger cities like Chattanooga, Seattle, Kansas City and Austin. We wouldn’t be here without Collin Rose’s vision and leadership of the team at DayStarr.”

Community investment is very important to DayStarr. The company supports SafeCenter; Curwood Festival; Shiawassee Community Foundation; YMCA; Owosso, Durand and Corunna schools; area youth sports teams; ARC of Shiawassee; Hope Network; Shiawassee County Fair; Oktoberfest; American Red Cross and the Laingsburg Educational Advancement Foundation, among many others. Employees also participate in area 5K run/walks and volunteer their time to a variety of causes. The team most recently spent a day of service on which it cleaned up the grounds of SafeCenter and built a canoe launch at the YMCA’s Camp Shiawassee.

Founded in 2001, DayStarr Communications provides the fastest and most advanced fiber-based communication services in Shiawassee County and parts of Clinton County to businesses and residential customers. The company specializes in high-speed internet up to 1,000M (1G), telephone service with local and long-distance phone service with high-definition voice and bundled cable TV packages, as well as cloud-based phone systems to businesses, and wholesale services such as TDM and Ethernet through fiber lines.
