THE BUY NEARBY GUY made an appearance at the Durand Farmer’s Market on Wednesday, Aug. 2, spending time posing for photos and mingling with the market’s many vendors and spectators. The Buy Nearby Guy is the mascot of the Michigan Retailers Association’s Buy Nearby campaign, which strives to remind Michiganders of the importance of spending shopping dollars locally.
“Keeping our money in the ‘Mitten’ benefits our state and local economies, and provides jobs for hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents,” said James P. Hallan, president and CEO of the Michigan Retailers Association (MRA).
The MRA has been reaching out to markets across the state this summer to spread its message. Buy Nearby is an ongoing, year-round campaign intended to create excitement about the great shopping opportunities in Michigan and the advantages of making purchases from businesses that invest in Michigan.
Shown with the Buy Nearby Guy are the Durand Farmer’s Market’s two longest participating vendors, Be DeClerg of Durand and Richard “Dick” Ball of Lennon. Each has been selling their wares at the market for 35 years, since the beginning.
