ALMOST TWO MONTHS after introducing a Blighted Area Ordinance, the Durand City Council designated the city’s first blighted property during the council’s Monday, May 1 meeting. The abandoned Simplicity factory building at 209 S. Oak St. sits on 2.25 acres of commercially zoned land that is located west of the Depot, and borders McBride Street to the north and railroad tracks to the south.
With the new designation applied to the property, the city can now begin the application process to obtain MHSDA funding, which would be used to redevelop the space. The exterior shell of the northern half of the building that is composed of brick could possibly be salvaged and repaired, but the effects of the fire in 2014 and the building’s prolonged abandonment, could lead to much of the building being demolished.
