The Shiawassee Arts Center will be offering one more Blacksmithing class for 2015 with artist/instructor Arthur Johns. This five-week course, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., will begin Tuesday, Oct. 13, and continue through Nov. 10. There will only be four students per session.

This course will offer a comprehensive, hands-on, overview of the art of Blacksmithing. Students will be introduced to basic forging and metal working techniques. These will include stock manipulation (both bar stock and sheet metal forming), basic tool making, traditional joinery and finishing techniques.

Students will be making some of their own tools, functional objects and designing/building their own individual projects. Proper safety gear will be needed (safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves and appropriate footwear).

Arthur is an artist/blacksmith with a Master of Fine Arts degree and primarily works in forged iron or steel. The cost is $220 for a SAC member or $235 for a non-member. An individual membership is $30 annually or $25 for a senior level membership. The class will take place at Arthur’s forge. Directions will be given to those who are registered. Pre-registration and payment required. Persons may call the Arts Center, (989) 723-8354, for information or registration. The Arts Center is at 206 Curwood Castle Drive, Owosso.
