With the school year winding down and the athletic seasons coming to a close, several Shiawassee County schools are celebrating outstanding state final performances in track and tennis. While most of the county’s schools sent athletes to the track and field state finals, the New Lothrop girls team finished the highest, in third place in Division 4, followed by fourth place finish by the Chesaning boys team in Division 3 and the seventh place finish by the Corunna boys team in Division 2.
Also placing during the Division 3 state meet in Zeeland on Saturday, June 4 were the Laingsburg and Byron girls teams, which tied for 33rd place; and the boys teams from Perry (39th), Laingsburg (49th), Ovid-Elsie (54th), and Byron (60th).
Shiawassee County can also claim several state title-winning athletes in 2016, as the New Lothrop girls 4×100 team, which consists of Skye Nancarrow, Alex Bedrosian, Sydney Pope, and Caitlyn Bruff, took first in their event; and Corunna’s Noah Jacobs won the 3,200 meter run and broke the state record by more than six seconds to repeat as state champion.
The state tennis championship was also held during the weekend of June 4, with the Chesaning girls team the only county team to compete. The team placed 14th in Division 4, with Anna Bates (No. 4 singles) winning a singles match, and the doubles teams of Lyndsey Schirle/Casey Hartt (No. 2 doubles) and Brooke Keck/Taylor Murphy (No. 3 doubles) each winning a match apiece. In addition to those five members, the team also included Olivia Conklin (No. 1 singles), Tyler Sadilek (No. 2 singles), Alexis Cross (No. 3 singles), Rosie Calandrino and Mia Copes (No. 1 doubles), and Brooke Miller and Kaylynn Princinsky (No. 4 doubles).
