Susan Treen, owner of Apple Tree Lane on N. Washington in downtown Owosso, received the surprise news Tuesday morning that she is the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Small Business of the Year honoree.

The Annual Outstanding Business Awards, established in 2003, are sponsored by Chemical Bank and were created to recognize Small, Medium and Large Businesses in Shiawassee County for their contribution to the region’s economic success. Criteria for the award include demonstrated business creativity/innovation and involvement in Community or Chamber of Commerce activities.

Treen volunteers for many activities for Owosso Main Street, the downtown merchants program. She is involved in GlowOwosso; Art Bike; The Art Walk and the Owosso Main Street Promotions Committee. Apple Tree Lane was recognized for “outstanding performance and lasting contributions” to Owosso Main Street in 2014-15.

The business has continuously reinvented itself from the early days as The Bake Shop. Susan Treen has grown the business from selling only baked goods to adding a candy making business, sales of Michigan-made products and in 2015, launched the Wooden Crate Popcorn Company.

The nominator stated, “Susan has worked very hard over the last 10 years to build Apple Tree Lane into the business it is today. Not only is she dedicated to her business but also to keeping Downtown Owosso a successful, vibrant part of the community. Apple Tree Lane is quick to volunteer to host merchant meetings and donates a significant amount of time and products to community events and fundraisers.”

The Outstanding Business Award Recipients will be formally honored during the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce 2016 Annual Dinner and Awards Night on Thursday, Jan. 28, at D’Mar Banquet & Conference Center, N. M-52, Owosso. Reservations may be made at the chamber office, by calling (989) 723-5149 or at www.shiawassseechamber.org.
