The Shiawassee County Health Department (SCHD) said just before noon Wednesday it had been informed of a second Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) occurring in Durand within the last week.
On Wednesday June 23, wastewater was discharged by the Durand Wastewater Treatment Plant into the Holly Drain north of the plant near Durand Road. Approximately 250,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater was discharged.
The Holly Drain flows into the Shiawassee River near Vernon. Additionally, an estimated 25,000 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged from the Genesee Lift Station into 3 Mile Creek at Durand. A total rainfall of 2.1 inches was measured at the Durand Wastewater Treatment plant as a result of severe weather Monday night and early Tuesday.
SCHD continues to advise that recreational users of the Shiawassee River avoid contact with the water until further notice. Minor flooding occurred throughout Shiawassee County. People were advised to use caution when traveling in low-lying areas. For further information about the situation, persons may contact Steve Mince, director of Public Works for the city of Durand at (989) 288-3113, or Larry Johnson, Health Director, Shiawassee County Health Department, (989) 743-2390.
