Avelyn Marshall, an RN, LMSW, and ACSW, opened a private practice here in Shiawassee County in March, specializing in depression, anxiety, grief, and loss. She is a Michigan State University graduate who has previously worked as an RN, for hospice, catholic charities, in private practice, and also for a psychiatrist. She has 20 years experience in private practice counseling. Avelyn lives in Williamston, but noticed the need for a private practice for counseling in this area.

Currently, Avelyn is facilitating a sexual abuse group and is planning to start another group for women who were sexually abused when they were younger. “The damage has already been done and the only way to get around it is to talk about it. A lot of people don’t realize it but sexual abuse is defined as anything that violates a woman’s boundaries – it could be parents running around naked, a parent telling them not to close the bathroom door, or touching them. I think it helps women when they are with others who have been through the same thing,” said Avelyn.

Also in the plans is a divorce support group, called Rebuilding. This will be a six-week group, held both during the day and in the evenings. The point is to deal with the pain of the past and rebuilding of your life after divorce.

Avelyn also plans to offer Art Therapy – both with individuals and groups. “Art is the key to unlocking the memories. It is easier to draw people out to talk sometimes. You don’t need any art experience. We can do collages or whatever they find interesting. Maybe even sculpting with clay,” said Avelyn.

Avleyn is also EMDR Certified, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy. She has been doing this for 20 years and there is no one in the area certified other than her. This type of therapy is designed for trauma and she uses it for anxiety, panic attacks, PSTD, sexual abuse survivors or anyone who survived another type of trauma.

Along with these specialized sessions that she is offering, Avelyn also offers grief counseling, either individual or group.

For anyone with questions about her services or about any individual or group sessions, Avelyn can be reached at (989) 251-4022. Her practice is located at 601 W. Corunna Ave., Ste. D., in Corunna. She accepts most insurances.
