The Shiawassee County Homeless Coalition sponsored the 2nd annual Bed Races with three teams entering. The mission of the Coalition is to address the causes and conditions of homelessness in Shiawassee County and includes twelve organizations such as Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, and Michigan Works!. From October 2013 to April 2014, it was calculated that there were 247 homeless households with almost half of the individuals listed as children under the age of 18.

All teams were tasked with creating a bed that met the specifications listed in the rules. Four runners were allowed to race but teams could have two alternates. The race started on Mason Street and then turned south onto Water Street to finish up in front of the Chamber.
