THE GREATER DURAND Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that Durand resident Jan Harper (right) has been selected as the 2019 Citizen of the Year. Harper will be honored at the Greater Durand Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner on Thursday, April 18 at the Durand VFW.

   Jan graduated from Owosso High School before moving to Durand in 1965 to begin her teaching career at Durand High School. Jan was an art teacher in Durand for 30 years, and she is also one of the founding members of “Conglomeration,” an art and writing showcase magazine for Durand students. Jan has been a member of the Durand Area School Board of Education and has worked at the state level for the Michigan Education Association.

   Jan founded the Durand Educational Foundation in 2013 and currently serves as the foundation’s chairperson. Jan has served as the facility coordinator for Durand Union Station, she is a lifetime member of the Memorial Healthcare Auxiliary, she served as the Durand representative on the Memorial Healthcare Board of Trustees from 2005 through 2017 and she is currently the Queen Bee of the Choo Choo Chicks.

   Reservations for the Greater Durand Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner are $40 per person and are required. Tickets will not be issued, but those who pre-pay will be placed on a reserved list. For more information, or to reserve a seat, call the chamber at (989) 288-3715.
