THE MID MICHIGAN Old Gas Tractor Association (MMOGTA) hosted its 11th annual education day on Friday, Sept. 22 at its 120-plus-acre site in Oakley. Nearly 600 4th-grade students from Owosso, Durand, Chesaning, St. Charles, Millington, and Merrill braved the 90-degree temperatures to get a glimpse of the many local Michigan treasures.
Students were treated to demonstrations of blacksmithing, shingle stamping, broom making, candle dipping, rope making, corn husking and shelling, threshing, and rock crushing, among others. The youngsters also checked out the MMOGTA’s fanning mill, veneer mill, shingle mill, handle mill, sorghum press, sawmill, large engine barn, stationary steam barn, antique tractor display, goats, sheep, and cows.
An annual favorite of the students are the antique tractor rides, and that was the case for Mrs. McKay’s 4th-grade students from Owosso’s Bryant Elementary, who can be seen cruising the MMOGTA grounds on Sept. 22.
